How do you sort out the facts from fiction? We've got the secrets behind many shampoo myths and misconceptions.

Check out our guide to "detangling" the most common shampoo myths!

Myth #1:

You need a good lather to know that your shampoo is working.

Truth:

Those suds are mostly created for psychological "it's cleaning" effect. Foaming occurs when sulfates in the shampoo mix with air and create tons of tiny bubbles. Many companies are choosing sulfate-free formulas now that some sulfates have been shown to cause dryness, irritation and even color fade! Sulfate-free formulas get the job done without the suds!

Myth #2:

You don't need to follow with a conditioner after shampooing.

Truth:

Conditioning the hair is vital for every hair type and condition. Shampoo can't clean properly and deposit enough conditioner to moisturize your locks. Using a separate conditioner will coat strands with ingredients that hydrate and protect. For best results, choose a formula designed specifically for your hair type and texture.

Myth #3:

After a while, your hair gets used to your shampoo. That's why you need to switch products occasionally.

Truth:

Many people swear that their hair will become immune to the benefits of the same shampoo used over time. The truth is that hair is dead so it can't 'get used to' anything. If you love your brand, there's no reason to switch.

Myth #4:

You must wash your hair every day.

Truth:

There is no correct schedule for washing hair. Every person should shampoo according to the specific needs of their hair type and texture. While some people do benefit from a daily shampoo, others benefit from a variety of shampooing schedules. Those with very oily hair may need to shampoo daily while those with coarse or dry hair may only need to shampoo every other day.
