Product Shelf Life vs. Home Use Life Span

Shelf life is the length of time a product has remained (unopened of course) in a warehouse or in a retailer's display case. There is sometimes a bar code so wholesalers will know how long the cosmetic has been around, and we trust they are keeping track of this before they ship or sell it. Once expired, the preservatives break down and bacteria can breed even in an unopened product.

The second challenge, after trusting the product you purchased is not past the ''shelf life'' is from the day you open your new product to when you should throw out that cosmetic. This is where Beauty Alert! Stickers come in. Expiration dates on make up and skin care products are not required by the FDA, but we know they do have a time limit. An actor in Seattle just had to go to a dermatologist, because the stage makeup everyone was sharing in the dressing room gave him an infection on his face that was quite alarming. This is the situation that occurs when unwitting consumers use a product and they have no idea how old it is, you can't see the dangerous bacteria but it is there. This actor had to get on antibiotics and go shopping for his own stage makeup which he promised not to share. The number one place that this occurs for women is mascara. Mascara is the perfect place for bacteria to breed, and the eyes are the most vulnerable and common place to get an infection or stye. But most people have no idea how long they have had their make up!

That is how Beauty Alert! can help you keep your make up clean and organized.
